San Francisco Artistic Newborn Photographer | capturing the beauty of the awake newborn

 It is no secret that I love photographing newborns. And over the years I have developed purty good timing if I do say so myself. For those of you that do not know, an awake newborn is moving almost constantly, not to mention fussing frequently. So many photographers opt for the sleeping newborn - a beautiful subject for sure. In my newborn sessions I do capture the beauty of the sleeping newborn, but the bigger challenge is capturing an awake, naked newborn and timing the shot just right so that he actually looks calm (he was fussing off and on), is looking at the camera (thanks to colorful toys shaken in front of camera) and to have all of the body parts aligned so that none of the awkward bits and pieces are showing (no easy task with naked newborn boys!) And Voila - with the right timing you can capture the shot!  This one is from a fun natural light newborn home session in San Francisco today with Michael, Maria and their beautiful son Alexander.

San Francisco Bay Area Environmental Photographer - Spring Portraits for Toddlers

Finally the warm weather is here and the ground is starting to dry up! This lovely San Francisco spring weather was wonderful for an 18 month portrait session with Laya! It was so warm she was able to run around in rain boots and bloomers!  We also took the opportunity to get some oh-so-pretty-in-pink pictures of her in her spring dress - then on to fun and action with her ladybug rain boots.  Still processing this busy session - but here are a few favorites to ring in the spring!

One Year Portrait Session in the Rose Garden

Once babies are just starting to walk - usually around one year - natural light photography sessions outdoor are a great choice. For little girls you can't beat a lovely garden for a beautiful background. In the Bay Area we have several great choices for Photography Sessions in Rose gardens including the Berkeley Rose Garden, the Oakland Rose Garden and several in San Jose.

I met Avena to photograph her in Oakland for her first portrait session! Avena is a clever, funny, charming little girl with a heart winning smile.  Here are some of my favorites from the session.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Vineyard Grape Fairy - one year portrait session

One of my recent favorites from a one year session at the family vineyard in Livermore - tutus and grape vines were a great inspiration to create this vineyard grape fairy shot. Adding a vintage feel in post-processing worked well.

We also hauled a couch out to the vineyard (thanks Jim!) and had some fun family portraits with the couch outdoors as well.  Here is one from the front of their holiday card...

Newborn Triplets

I was so excited when Kristy called me for a home session with her triplets - my first set of newborn triplets!  I have photographed many sets of twins, but this was my first opportunity for a baby triplet photo session!  They were actually very good - considering - and we only had one incident of one baby wetting on another. That is quite amazing considering there were three naked newborn bodies for an hour plus!

I have been inspired by plant life lately - spending as much time as I can outdoors enjoying the summer. And I have brought some of the outdoors in to some newborn home studies - using plants and botanicals with the one week old babies.  Here are some of my favorites...

 

Laya's got the blues - 9 month baby portraits

Another great session with Laya - she is such a ham!  She is 9 1/2 months and a member of our Oh Baby! Club, so I get to photograph her every few months in her first year to capture all of her stages.   This little girl really loves the camera!  This image really captured my heart today...

Abigail and the Blowing Flower - Location Portraits with 2 year olds

I love location sessions with toddlers!  Not only is natural light photography of children a fantastic way to capture their spirit, it also allows for movement, play and exploration.  I recently had a very fun toddler photography session with Abigail at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.  We played in the ferns and found some blowing flowers along the way - here are some of my favorites of Abigail and the blowing flower...

Toddler Portrait Session in the Rose Garden

I have been so busy with family sessions this fall, I have fallen behind on my blogging!  This session was at a lovely fall location at the Berkeley Rose Garden. Madeline is 15 months old and *loves* her stuff animals - can you find the stuffed animal friend in the pictures below?  She is a multi-faceted charming toddler who was a treat to document with her family for some great bay area family portraits .
